Gemstone & Jewelry Industry History

In 2009 the economy took a turn for the worse, and over the coarse of a few years afterwards, the jewelry industry greatly declined.  The economy was not the only factor in the degrading of the jewelry industry.

Diamonds are mined on large scale, with heavy machinery, and very large investments.  Colored gemstones, on the other hand are usually mined on small scale by a family or small group of people.  Colored gemstones are normally not found in large consistent quantity, color and quality – all necessary for advertising and supply in large scale to chain stores.

Synthetics & Treatments

Synthetics, and gemstone treatments have greatly improved over the last 20 years, making detection more difficult and providing the jewelry industry with large consistent quantities.  While synthetics are nice, most are obviously unnatural looking colors.

Treatments can improve quality, clarity, and provide phenomena, but can also greatly reduce value when comparing to all natural untreated gemstones.  Detection of treatments and the effects on value and durability of the gemstones are often not understood by consumers.

‘A Gem Source’ Difference

In 2016 I decided to search for some gemstones that I was aware of, but have never seen in Jewelry stores.   To my amazement, I found a whole world of beautiful, natural, colored gemstones.  I also quickly found that I really needed to gain expertise in gemstones to detect synthetics, treatments and to know how to grade gemstones.

Today, people buy jewelry and gemstones on TV and over the internet.  Most people do not realize how complicated it is to identify and grade gemstones and treatments.  I am trained by GIA, a leader in gemology, and have equipment that is portable, and can test and grade jewelry and gemstones at your location if preferred.

Natural gemstones are unique and able to provide consumers with one of a kind jewelry, and value.

Traditionally, gemstones pass many hands from mine, to distributer(s), to cutter, to distributer(s), to manufacturer, to distributer(s), to retail.  Every step adds cost and not necessarily value.
